Rand Paul: Trump is ‘anger without substance’

Rand Paul has been in Haiti on a humanitarian visit, but still found some time to criticize Trump for representing anger without depth.

In an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press, Paul said that Trump’s message is “empty anger … It’s an anger without substance.”

Ever since Trump’s rise to the top of Republican polls, the other candidates have tried to carve away at his support. So far, it hasn’t worked.

The appeal of Trump to Republican voters isn’t well understood by other candidates.

“Conservatives have to decide if he’s a fake conservative or not,” Paul said.

Thus far, Trump’s late shift to the Republican Party and his tendency to donate to candidates of both parties hasn’t hurt his popularity.

The Hill reported that Paul pointed toward Trump’s healthcare views to mark him as lacking in appeal for conservatives.

In the latest polling average from Real Clear Politics, covering Aug. 9 to Aug. 16, Paul is in 8th place with 4.3 percent support.
