President Obama might want to communicate the importance of the impeding student loan interest rate “crisis” to his campaign’s tech team.
A quick glance at Obama’s “College Affordability” page on the Obama 2012 website shows that the page hasn’t been updated since May 25. That was the day after the U.S. Senate voted down both the Republican and Democratic proposals to extend the 2007 interest rate reduction on Stafford student loans at the cost of $6 billion a year in taxpayer dollars.
Although Obama hasn’t exactly made the student loan interest rate reduction the front and center issue of his campaign throughout June, opting to spend his time going around Congress to enact immigration reform and trying to reignite the Democrats’ failed ‘War on Women,‘ he has not ignored the issue entirely since the page’s last update.
On June 8 Obama gave a speech on the issue at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. On June 21 he held a press conference to berate Congress for not coming to a comprise with the July 1 deadline fast approaching. And on Saturday, he made it the topic of his weekly address.
For a President who is struggling to win the youth vote by the margins he did in 2008, it seems odd that the campaign hasn’t bothered to update the page in more than a month. For the most tech savvy political campaign in history to make such a blunder should be seriously embarrassing to the Obama campaign, which is already looking to have quite an embarrassing week already.
