As Tropical Storm Isaac, soon to be hurricane, makes landfall later today, the Republican National Committee has decided to cancel its Monday programming for the Republican National Convention and might have to cut even more of its planned schedule as it waits to see what the storm brings.
Already, tornado warnings have been issued across Florida and will continue to be issued throughout Sunday and Monday, according to the Fox News Channel, and Florida Gov. Rick Scott has declared a state of emergency.
The trajectory of the hurricane might shift westward with the worst part of the storm centering between Biloxi, Miss. and Pensacola, Fla., and could be as big as a Category 3 storm.
The RNC will have to adapt by legthening the schedule of speakers and events on Tuesday in order to make up for the missed Monday activities. So far, the RNC programming committee is not cutting any of the speakers or events, although it might have to keep some short.
RNC Chairman Rince Priebus said that the decision to cancel some of the events was a result of the unpredictability of the aftermath of the tropical storm.
“We want to really be assured of total safety,” he said. But he also confirmed that they have no plans to cancel any part of Tuesday or the rest of the events throughout the week.
