In a dramatic new ad highlighting the inconsistencies of President Obama, the Romney campaign directly compares Obama’s rhetoric on supporting our US Military and his actions on reducing its funding. The ad plays several clips of Obama saying, “As long as I’m commander in chief, we will sustain the strongest military the world has ever known” but then intersperses these clips with text about how he’s undercut the military with spending cuts.
“For years, Barack Obama has campaigned on his commitment to the military” the text of the ad begins and then plays a clip of the president saying “I have continued to make historic investments to keep our armed forces strong.”
But the ad counters his statement with text that reads: “August 2011: President Obama signs $500 billion in looming defense cuts, threatens $500 billion more,” citing ABC News from August 2, 2011.
The ad then repeats the same formula with another clip of Obama stating, “We will sustain the strongest military the world has ever known.” The text on the screen then reads, “January 2012: Obama proposed a plan for a smaller, less capable military. ‘Obama Announces Pentagon Budget Cuts’ ”citing a piece in USA Today published on January 5, 2012.
The ad ends by putting a poignant question in voters’ minds: “Can we believe him?”
The president is seen walking on stage and cheers of “Obama” can be heard while the text on screen reads, “Instead, Obama told Democrats to focus on his reelection. So when Obama says [clip of Obama plays] ‘We will sustain the strongest military the world has ever known’… Can we believe him? $500 billion in cuts, $500 billion in proposed cuts.”
Most of the Romney campaign ads against the president have been about the depressing economy. But with the jobs report this morning showing a drop in the unemployment rate, which could be good news for Obama, it is good timing for the Romney campaign to shift focus to another area of concern for voters: our national defense.
