Media gets too close to the violent protests in Ferguson

As the protests took over Ferguson, Mo. Monday night, members of the media experienced a little more of the action than they bargained for during live broadcasts of the scene.

Tear gas, rocks, and direct hits from some of the more violent in the crowd were directed at reporters from all outlets.

CNN’s Don Lemon and Chris Cuomo were reporting live when their area was hit with tear gas, causing them to leave the scene.

“It’s going to get really bad if we don’t have masks,” Cuomo said.

“There are a lot of bean bags being shot,” he said as he was coughing.

Protestors could be seen running away from where the CNN crew was set up, some almost running into Cuomo as he attempted to explain the situation on air. But as the gas canisters exploded nearby, they had to switch to another reporter so they could relocate to another location.

CNN’s Sara Snider was hit with a rock as she was reporting live in front of an O’Reilly’s Auto Parts that had been destroyed in the riots.

“Ah! sorry, I just got hit by a rock,” she said, trying to continue her report. “I’m okay, I’m okay. I’ve been hit with much worse in my day.”

Jake Tapper interrupted her and asked her to move to safety.

“I’m sorry. I see other rocks going into the picture there. They’re obviously some really bad people near you. I want you to get to safety if you can. And we’ll come back to you and get more of your excellent reporting,” he said.

Fox News was also attacked head on by a protester.

A protester wearing a Guy Fawkes mask approached Fox News reporter Steve Harrigan, clearly yelled “F— you and f— Fox News,” and knocked over the live TV camera.

MSNBC’s Chris Hayes had to cut his interview with Pastor Michael McBride short after the sounds of gunfire filled the area.
