Planned Parenthood has released its 2012-2013 annual report but hidden in the sunny, colorful pamphlet is information the super-slick abortion giant doesn’t want you to notice.
One in 10 people who visit Planned Parenthood go there for abortion services
Planned Parenthood and its advocates love to say that “only” 3 percent of their services are abortion. While the 3 percent number is technically correct, counting the number of services is not a good metric. A better measurement is the rate of abortions per client. On page 14 of the annual report, in the fine print with 6 asterisks, Planned Parenthood states that it served approximately 3 million people. With a reported 327,166 abortions, that means that at minimum more than 1 in 10 — 11 percent — of people (both men and women) who walk into a Planned Parenthood get an abortion. The true numbers of how many women go to PP to have an abortion must be much higher than that, but the report does not break down clients by gender so it is impossible to get exact figures.
Almost 94 percent of Planned Parenthood’s services for pregnant women are abortions
Susan B. Anthony List calculates (emphasis in original):
- In 2012, abortions made up 93.8% [327,166] of Planned Parenthood’s pregnancy services, while prenatal care and adoption referrals accounted for only 5.6% (19,506) and 0.6% (2,197), respectively. For every adoption referral, Planned Parenthood performed 149 abortions.
This means that Planned Parenthood gave more than 9 in 10 pregnant women abortions!
Planned Parenthood is performing fewer and fewer cancer screenings
Abortion is not an act that Americans are comfortable with promoting, so it is no wonder Planned Parenthood wants to downplay how central it is to their business model. Instead they try to emphasize things like cancer prevention — however, contrary to what President Barack Obama believes, PP does not perform mammograms. SBA List also notes that other cancer screenings have dropped 14 precent in one year and 39 percent since 2009.
And Students for Life of America points out in their “Planned Parenthood Project” that the non-abortion services Planned Parenthood provides can be easily found elsewhere.
Almost half of Planned Parenthood’s revenue is from the government
Planned Parenthood reports that 45 percent of their revenue is from the government. In 2012-2013, it received $540.6 million in taxpayer funding, while reporting more than $1.3 billion in net assets.
SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser said in a release, “Business is booming for America’s largest abortion provider, which receives public funding at a rate of $1.5 million per day. …Planned Parenthood claims to be a trusted health care provider to women and girls, but their numbers tell a different story. Planned Parenthood is a business whose entire mission is to profit off of abortion.”
A vast majority of Americans oppose public funds being spent on abortion and, while PP is legally prevented from using tax money for abortion, there is no doubt that the fact that they receive such a significant amount helps free up the rest of their budget for promoting and performing abortions.
Planned Parenthood is increasing its campus outreach
Planned Parenthood boasts in the opening message that it has increased the number of chapters on college campuses by 50 percent. Those are very vague numbers. A Gallup poll over the summer found that 57 percent 18-34-year-olds want abortion to be illegal in most or all circumstances, so maybe PP is feeling the heat and scrambling to recruit a new generation of supporters.
Meanwhile, Students for Life is finding it is making great strides on campuses across the country in spreading the pro-life, anti-Planned Parenthood message, with more than 700 student groups created across the country.
“Planned Parenthood continues to target young women, but our generation is waking up to their lies and will not be fooled anymore,” SFLA President Kristan Hawkins told Red Alert. “Planned Parenthood’s latest annual report just shows further evidence that they are an abortion business, concerned only with profits and their radical agenda, not women’s health and safety. The facts about Planned Parenthood refute their lofty rhetoric and expose the seedy underside of America’s abortion Goliath.”
Go beyond the photos of smiling faces to the hard numbers in the back of Planned Parenthood’s 2012-2013 annual report and you will find Planned Parenthood’s focus and dependence on abortion — something it’s likely they’d rather you not see.
