The U.S. Military loves whiskey, tops buyer list of Jack Daniel’s every year

Apparently, the men and women who serve our country prefer to be served whiskey. And not just any whiskey, but Jack Daniel’s.

The United States military buys more of the brand’s premium Single Barrel whiskey than anyone in the entire world and has remained the top purchaser since the distillery created the ‘By The Barrel’ program in 1998, according to an email sent to Business Insider by Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller Jeff Arnett.

One single barrel contains approximately 250 bottles of Jack and ranges from $9,000 to $12,000 per unit. The popular barrels are purchased for a number of reasons and Arnett reports that most purchases are “represented by base exchanges, individual units, as well as other on-base military entities like Officers’ Clubs.”

Sounds like a barrel is present at almost every military celebration.

It is even rumored that Navy SEAL Team 6 bought a barrel after the successful raid on Osama Bin Laden. Jack Daniels officials could not confirm that it was SEAL Team 6 specifically, but said that SEAL teams had purchased barrels in the past.

If the rumor is true, that has to be one of the most justified barrels in the history of alcohol purchases.

Next time you plan on paying it forward and buying a round for a man or woman in uniform, it would be safe to assume whiskey will be their liquor of choice.
