Sen. Ted Cruz and former Texas Gov. Rick Perry may both be vying for the GOP presidential nomination, but on Saturday they put that competition asid for the Pro-Family Rally at the South Carolina State Capitol.
The website for the rally spoke specifically of the recent same-sex marriage ruling, but also mentioned religious liberty, the Constitution, family values and the future of the nation.
The website and rally had a Christian perspective, as the other speakers included pastors. Many of the attendees “said they came to take stands for what they believe is right based on the teachings of the Bible,” The State reported.
On Saturday morning, at least 10,000 people showed up for the rally. There was also a choir of 600.
On Twitter the event was showcased with #WeStandWithGod and the Pro-Family Rally account included pictures of the crowds and various speakers.
The rally also addressed religious liberties and abortion.
Cruz mentioned that “our nation is in crisis right now,” and echoed his previously made claims about how Congress has dealt with defunding Planned Parenthood.
“Preach life to the pulpits, preach life to the congregation, and we need to call all our leaders. No show votes, no empty votes. Stand up and lead and defund Planned Parenthood today,” Cruz said, according to the Christian Post.
Perry spoke from a more general religious liberty standpoint.
He said those freedoms are “being put in jeopardy today” and referred to how “this city was taught right from wrong in our synagogues, in our churches.” Religious liberty is “under attack from Washington, D.C.”
