British millennials were overwhelmingly disappointed by the United Kingdom voting to leave the European Union, but their American counterparts felt much differently.
A Public Policy Polling report released on Thursday showed that a plurality of American millennials supported Brexit over remaining in the EU, 42 percent to 17 percent. Gen Y was the most supportive age group of the effort, mostly led by British conservatives.
Millennials seem to favor self-determination among all people to decide how they’re governed, regardless of politics. A Gallup Poll from 2015 showed that millennials were the most supportive of a Palestinian state and Scottish millennials were the driving force behind their country’s failed 2014 independence vote.
American millennials didn’t just support Brexit across the pond —more than a third favor Texas independence from the United States.
Despite the fact that an independent Texas is considered a far-right proposal, 37 percent of millennials favor secession while only 46 percent oppose the idea. Gen Y was the most supportive age demographic in favor of Texas statehood.
As millennials become the dominate political force in the future, self-determination could be a growing political reality.
