Albuquerque’s awesome school choice program offers college degrees

Those in the Albuquerque School District who want a more tailored education won’t have to go to a charter or private school to get it.

The school district’s website lists the kinds of special schools under “Schools of Choice,” which include:

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math)
Rigorous College Prep
Online Learning
Multiple Paths to Graduation
College Credit in High School
Career Awareness & Readiness
Project Based & Technology
Dual Language
Family School
APS Charter Schools

The district is also having a School Choice Fair  this Thursday to provide more information for those interested in these some 100 schools.

Local news station KRQE has highlighted the fair, and talked to the district’s Executive Director of Communications, Monica Armenta:

If you’re someone who’s interested in science and technology, we have several of those schools to choose from. We have bilingual schools, we have schools that are focused on project learning, just  about anything that you can imagine that’s addressed now through private schools or different charters are offered through Albuquerque public schools.

Not only will students be able to get a certain kind of education of their choosing, but can get an Associate’s degree in some cases. This will certainly save costs.

The program appears to be popular. KRQE points out that the fair attracted thousands last year, despite the rain and the cold.

School choice is an important issue for students, and their parents who have a vested interest in their children’s education. It’s refreshing to see that Albuquerque is making it that much easier for students to really get the education that’s best for them.
