Apparently, Jon Stewart is mad at Congress for not coming to an agreement on how to fix the immigration crisis at the southern border.
During a segment on “The Daily Show” Monday night called “The Kids in the Haul,” the comedian ripped Congress — and Senator Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) in particular — for what he described as insufficient action on the immigration issue.
Stewart criticized the House of Representatives’ proposed bill of $659 million to combat the border crisis, which undercut the president’s request for $3.7 billion. He used an interesting analogy to express his disapproval.
“It’s like, this man needs a heart transplant,” Stewart said, mocking House Republicans. “Oh, a heart transplant? Well, how about if I give him four possum hearts and a transistor radio?”
However, the comedian did admit that the House did a better job than the Senate at coming up with legislation.
“I guess compared to the Senate’s nothing bill, the House at least has actual legislation,” explained Stewart. “All that they have to do is pass this bill, and they all look like heroes.”
Then, the comedian ripped into Sen. Ted Cruz for telling House Republicans over pizza and beer not to vote on any such legislation to solve the immigration issue.
“Pizza or no pizza,” Stewart uttered. “Screw that guy. Who cares what he thinks?”
“House Republicans were so close to the appearance of doing something and their plan was sabotaged with pizza, no less,” he continued. “This may be pizza’s darkest hour, second only to when the Nazis invaded France under the pretense of delivering 5 million of them.”
Stewart appeared to take President Obama’s side on the matter, despite the fact that the $3.7 billion he requested in emergency funding was mostly geared toward caring for the immigrant children instead of actually securing the border and staunching the flow of illegal immigrants. He also slammed the House for both of the bills it did pass.
“This is so insane,” said Stewart. “We had an urgent crisis on the southern border. The president offers a solution. The Senate can’t even get theirs to an up or down vote and the House passes a draconian version that somehow moves to the right of itself. At this point, can anything be done?”
He then skewered House Speaker John Boehner for his statement that Obama has options to ameliorate the crisis that don’t require congressional approval.
“There are numerous steps the president can and should be taking right now, without the need for congressional action,” Boehner said in a joint statement along with Reps. Kevin McCarthy, Steve Scalise and Cathy McMorris Rodgers.
Stewart suggested that it was hypocritical of the House speaker to make such a statement while simultaneously threatening the president with a lawsuit for his overuse of executive power. Of course, Boehner’s statement did not recommend Obama to abuse executive order. He simply pointed to the fact that the president does have avenues to help the crisis.
President Obama said last week that he will “have to act alone” to fix the immigration problem.
