Congress doesn’t need more cowbell — it needs more Sen. Ted Cruz!
According to Heritage Foundation President Jim DeMint, recapturing the Senate for Republicans comes down to electing more people like the feisty Texas Senator.
“All we need is a few more Ted Cruzs,” DeMint said to a group of young professionals gathered at Heritage on Monday night. “Maybe five more in the Republican Congress, and we would be at a point where we could change the whole Congress.”
DeMint also said adding more people like Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Rand Paul (R-Ky.), Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.) could “turn our whole country around.”
In 2010, DeMint’s organization, Senate Conservatives Fund, backed successful first time candidates Sens. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.), Paul, Lee, Johnson and Rubio — all linked with the Tea Party movement. At the beginning of the year, DeMint stepped down from his South Carolina Senate seat to become president of the Heritage Foundation. Yet he will remain active in the political process, despite his earlier assertion that he would be out of politics in 2014.
“Mostly what we’re gonna do is try to do is cultivate the right ideas so that the candidates who adopt the right ideas will win elections rather than lose them,” DeMint said on Monday. “And I do want to be involved in more candidate training, and we can do that at Heritage as a non-partisan thing.”
Pressed after his speech to comment on who some of these candidates might be, DeMint remained elusive, only hinting at some of the seats they might take.
“I don’t wanna say the names right now.” he said. “But there are a lot of seats that are gonna be in play.”
He added that he’ll be “involved” somehow in that process.
So where are those seats?
“Gosh, I don’t have the map in front of me,” DeMint said as he exited the building.
