Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Cali.) the Republican Majority Leader who was the odds-on favorite to be the next Speaker of the House, dropped out of the running on Thursday morning after it was clear he didn’t have the votes.
While rumors are still circulating as to why he dropped out, part of the reason may be because of the House Freedom Caucus’ endorsement of Rep. Daniel Webster (R-Fla.) for Speaker on Wednesday.
Close allies of McCarthy’s were surprised by the move.
“Totally stunned,” said Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) on CNN.
