There’s no mistaking that the marketing campaign for Wonderful Pistachios channels the latest cultural phenomena in the United States, drawing inspiration from reality shows, viral YouTube videos and Hollywood celebrities. But one recent ad didn’t focus on innocent nationwide water cooler buzz such as Snooki’s tanning or keyboard cat, but rather an embarrassing scandal that reached the highest levels of the United States government.
The United States’ Secret Service Colombian prostitute scandal that shocked the nation earlier this year has found its way into the latest ad for the popular nut brand, Wonderful Pistachios. The television commercial shows scantily clad Latina women, seated on the laps of men in suits and sunglasses, feeding them pistachios as the ad’s narrator states, “The Secret Service do it… and get fired for it.”
The prostitute scandal saddened millions of Americans as it showed a lack of disregard for not only the president’s safety, but a moral misjudgment by those occupying some of the highest and most secure positions in the United States government.
Yet despite this unfortunate event, Wonderful Pistachios has taken on the calculated risk of actively promoting their product with the less than reputable profession of selling sex.
