Caitlyn Jenner told students at the University of Pennsylvania last month that she has “gotten more flak for being a conservative Republican than I have for being trans.” It looks like that will continue to be the case.
Jenner recently told the Advocate that she wanted to be Ted Cruz’s “trans ambassador.” She had unfollows on Twitter as a result.
The season premiere of I Am Cait very much proves the above statement. During the show, Jenner has a great time hanging out with her girlfriends, with her being trans not seen as an issue. But then politics comes up.
The recap mentions an exchange between Jenny Boylan and Jenner, with Boylan blaming the repeal of a Houston ordinance, which now means men who want to be women cannot use women’s public restrooms, on Republicans. As the recap notes, “Jenny asks Cait how she feels about the situation since conservatives were the ones influential in the reversal, but Cait refuses to place the blame on her political party—or listen to the opposing side.”
Phrasing an argument in such a way is likely not going to get someone to open to your side, but Jenner handled it in stride. “Republicans and the conservatives are not these horrible people out there trying to oppress people,” she mentioned. “I don’t feel like they’re out to get us. Every conservative guy out there believes in everybody’s rights.”
“All of the ladies look uncomfortable and bewildered after hearing Cait’s stance on the issue,” since it must unfathomable for them to hear that not all trans persons would be Democrats, and that some would even be Republicans.
Another, Candis Cayne, someone who is supposed to be Jenner’s friend noted:
Boylan warned that “if she doesn’t listen to the rest of the community, I think she’s going to find herself isolated and irrelevant.” It just goes to show that you can change your sex no problem, but as soon as you do so, and continue to stick up for your conservative beliefs, you’re shunned.
Jenner is not only a Republican, she’s no fan of Hillary Clinton either. While on a bus tour with other transgender women, she said she didn’t want to stop at the Democratic debate. As she saw it, Hillary “couldn’t care less about women. She cares about herself.”
Gawker, which will search high and low to make fun of Republicans, also joined in. Rich Juzwiak referred to Jenner’s “willful ignorance regarding the ways of the willfully ignorant.” He didn’t hold back in his intro either, writing how Jenner is “willing to blindly defend Republicans” and also further suggesting her conservative views are out go ignorance, in that the “episode vividly illustrated just how little logic or thought she’s put into that affiliation given just how little Republicans advocate for (and how often they advocate against) LGBT rights.”
