Although Hillary Clinton may have been mentioned a lot on Facebook when compared to her potential GOP challengers in 2016, the former secretary of State has nothing on the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
According to data released by Facebook, the World Cup in Brazil became the most-buzzed-about topic to date on the social media site this year, as reports CBS News.
Collected between January and December of 2014, the data also speaks to the massive popularity of this summer’s ALS Ice Bucket Challenge trend.
Of the over 17 million #IceBucketChallenge videos posted to Facebook, the most-watched included those starring former President George W. Bush, actor Will Smith and billionaire businessman Bill Gates.
The movie “Frozen” also appears to have been significantly popular this year even though it was released in November 2013.
The Disney filmed snagged the prize for most-discussed movie, and the hit song “Let It Go” from the motion picture was one of the most-talked-about songs on Facebook.
In addition to the World Cup and the Ice Bucket Challenge, other top global topics included the Ebola virus, Ferguson, Robin Williams, the Malaysia Airlines crash and the Super Bowl.
Predictably, Ferguson and Ebola were also big talkers in the United States specifically, in addition to the midterm election and ISIS.
And, despite the plethora of political television shows currently on the air, there was only one that fell into the top-10 list of most-talked about TV series: “Scandal.”
