Bill Maher couldn’t ‘flip a district’ and unseat Minnesota Rep. John Kline

Wednesday, Bill Maher admitted defeat in his campaign to unseat Minnesota Republican Rep. John Kline.

After Kline won reelection to his seat in Minnesota’s 2nd district Tuesday, Maher admitted on Twitter that his “Flip a District” challenged failed.

Back in September, the “Real Time” host launched a campaign against Kline to “flip” his Republican district from red to blue.

“He’s one of those silent threats you never see coming: Ebola. ISIS. John Kline,” Maher said of the GOP congressman during a live taping of his show in Washington, D.C. “He’s not funny, just wrong about everything. And more than anyone else we could find, he embodies the easily swayed oars and sellouts who keep this town running.”

Unfortunately for Maher, his campaign — like many Democratic campaigns Tuesday — failed handedly. Kline walked away with 56 percent of the vote, beating his liberal challenger Mike Obermueller.

In addition to campaigning against Kline via Twitter using the hashtag #FLIPKLINE, Maher also visited Kline’s district in October to discourage voters from casting their ballots for the Republican congressman.

He even addressed the “Flip a District” challenge in an interview with The New York Times, which ran two days before the midterm election.

“If we could flip this guy, or at least make it way closer than it’s ever been,” Maher urged during the telephone interview. “I think it would send a message.”

Apparently, Maher failed to deliver that message, and Kline emerged from the race a proud victor.
