It appears as if one Indiana high school is advocating population control, after a “zero population growth” sign was hung in one of its hallways.
The sign, which appeared on a wall in Northview High School, seemingly encourages students to have no more than two children during their lives. It depicts the effects of population growth with smiley faces crowding a timeline.
“Zero population growth,” the poster reads. “It’s up to you — no more than two.”
The sign was originally discovered by Father John Hollowell, who posted a photo of the sign on his blog.
When reached by phone, Principal Ernie Simpson declined to comment on the sign.
But according to a few comments on the Father’s blog, the sign is used every year, and might even be left up year-round. Yet according to commenter Christine Niles, the banner has since been removed.
Niles emailed Simpson, expressing her belief that the sign was misleading. The principal responded — and Niles posted the transcript of that email to Hollowell’s blog — and apologized for the sign, explaining that its original intent was not to offend or push any agenda. Simpson told her that the banner had since been removed.
“I, along with my staff, make every attempt to be vigilant in making sure that we create an atmosphere and environment at Northview that is welcoming to all,” the principal wrote to Niles. “If the banner impedes our progress in those efforts, it needs to come down. Thus, I removed the banner immediately.”
