Rep. Cory Gardner (R-CO) says he won’t be “doing the ‘Harlem Shake'” with Obama “any time soon,” despite the president’s recent attempts to reach out to the GOP.
The “Harlem Shake” is a bizarre dance that has taken the virtual word by storm in which one person frantically waves his hands attempting to inspire a large group to follow suit in a type of impromptu dance party.
But it looks like Gardner will not be falling in line behind the president via dance or politics anytime soon.
“Time will tell whether this overture, whether the president’s attempt to rebuild relations — or in many cases to build relationships with Congress for the first time — is truly genuine. I hope they are,” Gardner said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday.
“But the last time that we witnessed Paul Ryan be invited to a speech that the president was giving before the American public, he then turned around and chastised him,” the Republican from Colorado said on the show. “The last time we went over to the White House the president lectured us. I hope that he’s genuine. But I don’t think we’re going to be doing the ‘Harlem Shake’ any time soon together.”
Last week, the president took several GOP senators to dinner and had a lunch date with Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), both leading members of the House Budget Committee.
He’s also penciled in time for Republican leaders later this week, as he is scheduled to meet with House Republicans on Wednesday and Senate Republicans on Thursday.
But Obama’s second term got off to a rocky start with the Republican Party when he delivered a partisan speech at his inauguration on what was was supposed to be a day of bipartisanship. Not to mention, the commander-in-chief did not exactly forge strong relationships with GOP leaders during his first four years.
And Gardner and others haven’t forgotten.
Obama’s recent efforts just aren’t enough for Gardner to do the “Harlem Shake” with President Obama which may be best seeing as the lyrics, roughly translated from Spanish, call you to “shake with the terrorists.”
