Conservative TV personality defeats liberal former first lady–in Guatemala

A a conservative television personality known for his outrageous character won Guatemala’s presidential election against a former first lady by running as a political outsider. Sound like a familiar scenario?

The New York Times reported on Sunday that Jimmy Morales–famous for his television comedy show–won a resounding victory with 70 percent of the vote.

The political outsider ran against the former First Lady Sandy Torres, who ran on expanding the social programs that she advocated for during the time her husband was president.

“With this vote you made me president. I have received a mandate, and the mandate of the people of Guatemala is to fight against the corruption that has consumed us,” Morales said after his victory was announced.

The television personality was known for his politically incorrect style of humor on the variety comedy show that made him famous when he donned blackface and made light of Japanese prisoners of war.

With a little more than a year before the presidential election in America and television personality Donald Trump and former First Lady Hillary Clinton leading the pack in their respected party’s primaries, maybe the Central American country is foreshadowing what will happen in 2016?
