Christine O’Donnell: Contraceptive Mandate Exposes Intolerance

Red Alert Politics bumped into former Delaware GOP Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell at CPAC today. O’Donnell spoke to Red Alert about Barack Obama’s contraceptive/abortifacient mandate, which she said exposes his intolerance of people whose religious beliefs differ from his own.

“This whole contraceptive mandate really exposes this administration for what it is, and it exposes Barack Obama for [who he] is,” O’Donnell said. “President Obama is thumbing his nose at our religious liberties.

“What he’s saying with this contraceptive mandate is that the church doesn’t have the right to believe what they believe and that they have to believe what he says they have to believe,” O’Donnell continued. “It is unconstitutional, un-American, and we can’t put up with a commander-in-chief like that.”

She said the denunciation of the mandate by liberals who ordinarily are pro-choice on abortion and contraception underscores what she sees as the mandate’s extremism.

“I think that, I hope that, this serves as a wake-up call to voters,” she said. “This is only the tip of the iceberg.

“This is thumbing your nose at religious liberties and exposing Barack Obama for what he is, and that is what the voters need to think about going into 2012.”

For O’Donnell, this action underscored her contention that the President doesn’t think twice about “trampling all over the Constitution” and that he wants government involved in all aspects of Americans’ lives.

O’Donnell refrained, however, from suggesting that Congress pass legislation to reinforce the freedom of conscience.

“We already have in our Constitution the freedom to express your religion,” she says. “We have to protect that, but we don’t need to add more government regulations to protect the freedoms that we already have.

“But what we need is a president who respects the Constitution.”
