Congressional Democrats refuse invitation to watch videos on Planned Parenthood

Congress may still be out on recess, but one pro-life group is calling on staffers to take the time to watch videos from the Center for Medical Progress. The videos feature top Planned Parenthood employees and allege that the abortion provider is illegally profiting from the sale of fetal parts.

Susan B. Anthony List is a pro-life group which aims to elect pro-life candidates. The group’s president Marjorie Dannenfelser sent a letter to staffers, focusing particularly on Democrats.

In part the letter reads:

As we continue to bring this issue to light, and more videos are released by the Center for Medical Progress, members of the press continue to report that many members of Congress and/or their staff have not seen any of the seven videos released so far. On July 15, The Hillwrote that while several Democrats spoke up to defend the embattled organization, all of them had failed to watch the videos. Again, a couple weeks later on August 3, the Weekly Standard reported that most Senate Democrats had not seen the videos before voting to block efforts to defund the organization. As a former Democratic staffer, I want to make sure that you have the opportunity to simply view these videos at a convenient location with no distractions.

In closing the letter expressed a “hope that during this August recess you will join us in viewing the videos that have shaken the American conscience and reignited the abortion debate.”

The screening took place Thursday morning at the Captiol in HC-5. The press was also invited to attend.

Kelsey Harkness of The Daily Signal was present, and tweeted that Democrats did not heed the call to watch the videos.

Mallory Quigley, the Communications Director for the pro-life group tweeted statements from Dannenfelser.

She and Harkness also tweeted pictures of Planned Parenthood staffers who were present but refused to talk to media.

The letter acknowledges that the timing of the event occurred during the August recess. This may explain why so few attended.

Another unfortunate explanation may be though that members of Congress have already made up their mind on the issue.
