Piers Morgan attempts to make Charleston shootings about himself

Piers Morgan has lived in America for years, but has never become a citizen. He has chosen instead to become a critic of the U.S. and its Second Amendment.

Morgan wrote yet another column in the Daily Mail Thursday about his disgust for America’s gun culture. He also rambled on about how the nation he has been a guest in is inefficient in responding to our gun violence.

“I’m sick of this,” Morgan said. “I’m sick of waking up to yet another hideous, needless gun massacre in America. I’m sick of seeing the helpless, grieving relatives weeping and wailing for their lost ones. I’m sick of hearing that the mass shooter, as at Newton, Aurora and now Charleston, was a twisted young white kid with a mental disorder who had absurdly easy access to guns.”

He blamed the NRA for wanting more access to firearms, politicians for not pushing legislation to ban guns, President Obama for not fighting for greater gun control, and the American people for buying weapons.

“I’m sick of hearing that the 2nd Amendment can’t be amended to drag it into modern life because the Constitution is such a sacred document. It’s already an AMENDMENT. Do the damn math,” said Morgan.

Near the end of his list of how primitive American culture is for our easy access to gun ownership, Morgan compares the U.S. to other nations like Australia, England, and Japan. All of three nations have extremely strong gun control laws and a low number of gun murders.

Unfortunately for Morgan, America is not his native England. The central organizing principle of the U.S. is liberty, including the liberty to own a firearm.

Increasing gun ownership does not equate an increase in the murder rate.

Liberal Vermont, for instance, has some of the most unrestrictive laws on firearm ownership, yet has some of the fewest gun murders according to a 2011 FBI crime report.

Pew Research reported that despite the rampant gun ownership, the gun homicide rate is down 49 percent since 1993.

Whether Morgan likes it or not, gun ownership in America is only going to become freer thanks to a recent Supreme Court ruling. He is woefully on the wrong side of history.

The tragedy in Charleston is not about Morgan or how it makes him feel. America’s gun laws are equally not about him. History and facts are not on his side.
