John Oliver, who once spurred his followers to crash the FCC’s website demanding net neutrality, is positively gleeful over the news that the agency has approved rules to regulate the internet like a public utility.
“This is genuinely good news,” said Oliver, “Because internet service providers are sad.”
He mocked Republicans who call net neutrality “the notion that the latest cat video is of equal important to a teleconference consultation for a heart patient.”
“You are misunderstanding what net neutrality is. Cat videos are part of the point,” Oliver insisted. “Net neutrality is about keeping providers from picking and choosing whose voices get heard, ensuring that the internet remains a democratic space for all messages.”
Of course, Oliver glosses over explaining how the government imposing heavy-handed regulations that stifle any future innovation—which even some net neutrality advocates are opposed to—will keep the internet the open playing field he so desires.
