Young Republican creates Kanye West PAC for 2020

Kanye West received a lifetime achievement award at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, but one fan wants to see him achieve another goal: the presidency.

Eugene Craig, a 24-year-old Maryland Republican and head of the Young Minority Republicans Fund, created a PAC called Ready for Kanye after West declared his candidacy in 2020 during his acceptance speech.

“It’s a great opportunity to do some outreach and engagement,” Craig said. “You gotta strike iron when the iron’s hot.”

Craig was also on Red Alert Politics’ list of 30 Under 30.

Drafting Kanye for a run is about spreading awareness.

“Nobody knows if he will actually do it, but if he does do it, I would really love for him to do it under the Republican brand, the Republican Party,” Craig said. “It’s a great opportunity to do some outreach and engagement.”

West would be a magnet for the youth vote. Ironic support would be a factor, but West could focus on serious debate.

“He can articulate the principles of small business, anti-corporatism, school choice, and the war on drugs in a way that others can’t,” Craig said.

West has been successful during the last decade in a way that few others have. A tolerant social agenda and responsible fiscal approach, or a campaign that focuses on a few of those issues, could gain momentum.

“I think you have to take into consideration that he’s a cross-cultural icon,” Craig said.

After all, Craig said, the one song that would best describe West’s political approach is “Never Let Me Down.”

West admitted that he “rolled up a little something” before his presidential announcement on Sunday, but a presidential run might be more successful than ridiculous. The rise of Donald Trump shows that voters resonate with non-traditional candidates.
