It is the dawn of a new era. Stephen Colbert opened his show Thursday with a startling endorsement: he is supporting Darth Vader for president in 2016.
As Colbert said, the 2016 election is closer than you think, unless of course you think it is about two years away. In any event, it’s time to start looking at poll numbers and a new poll by Nate Silver shows that politicians of both parties trail most Star Wars characters.
“This is shocking. A group of broadly outlandish, unbelieveable characters are less popular than the people from Star Wars,” Colbert said.
Colbert went through several of the matchups, noting that Sen. Marco Rubio was running even with Emperor Palpatine and Hillary Clinton was trailing well behind Yoda, “who, at 900 years old, still gets fewer Fox News questions about his age.”
“He looks good, had a little work done, he has,” he joked.
Colbert then seized the opportunity to make his endorsement formal.
“The electorate is becoming more and more diverse,” said Colbert, “and there’s no question he is a strong black candidate. And he has a plan to put Americans back to work with a massive infrastructure program. Plus, Lord Vader is a veteran fighter pilot who knows what it is like to work in an oval office.”
