Forget the confetti and the moving speeches. The single best part of the 2012 Democratic National Convention was when former Representative Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) took the stage to lead the convention in the Pledge of Allegiance.
The former congresswoman, escorted by DNC Chairwoman and close friend Debbie Wasserman Schultz, entered the arena to an uproarious applause and was seen shuffling carefully as she made her way to the center of the stage. Her bright eyes and small wave were enough to swell the tear ducts of every man and woman in that room. The Congresswoman’s remarkable recovery after being shot in the head just 20 months ago, is an inspiring story and an apolitical moment this nation should cherish forever.
The presence of Giffords, a room full of supporters chanting “Gabby! Gabby!” and our beautiful pledge recited was truly the very best part of the 2012 DNC.
