When presidential hopeful Rand Paul appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart Tuesday night he had to have known he would be fielding some tough questions from the fast-talking host.
But it’s doubtful that Stewart expected the tables to be turned on his talking points.
The Kentucky senator’s appearance was announced in conjunction with the publication of his new book, but the attention was quickly shifted to his recent filibuster last week against an extension of the Patriot Act.
Stewart gets right into the thick of things by first stating to Paul, “Your party is known for wanting to defend, uh, the people of America from government overreach to protect liberty I believe they call it.” This is an idea that Stewart spent the first half of his show ranting about.
Paul acknowledges the inconsistency of “his party” and their tendency to act on the idea.
“We don’t like big government until we do like big government,” he said.
Stewart took his answer that tried to liken it to religious liberty issues, like gay marriage and private businesses, in the second half of the interview.
But Paul took back the reigns and brought their talk around full circle before Stewart even knew what hit him.
