Rep. Diane Black slams Sen. Mitch McConnell over Planned Parenthood

He may be pro-life, but Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s attitude over defunding Planned Parenthood has drawn criticism, and from those in his own party.

Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.) is one such fellow Republican pro-lifer. Towards the end of her interview on Dana Loesch’s radio program, Black commented on McConnell’s efforts, and as Loesch put it, “how it’s kind of hard to maneuver in the House when you have the Sen. Majority Leader basically threatening to shutdown efforts on his end.”

Black had a fitting response:

You don’t put up a white flag until you’ve fought the battle. We haven’t fought the battle yet so when we pass this in the House, I fully intend on calling upon the leader of the Senate, Mister McConnell, to bring this bill up. I’m going to beat the drum and let everyone know that I believe he at least needs to fight the fight. He doesn’t need to give up the battle . . . I think it needs to get full debate over there. It needs to get a vote . . . It needs to be put on the President’s desk. Let’s show who he [President Obama] really is. Let’s show how much he loves Planned Parenthood and how little value he has for the human life.

McConnell has repeatedly voiced his opposition to shutting down the government. As for the Planned Parenthood vote in particular, his words are not so comforting either.

The Sen. Majority Leader  has come out against attempting to defund Planned Parenthood as part of a larger budget bill. In an interview with Politico last week, he called such moves “an exercise in futility.” He also repeated his point that “the honest answer of that is that’s not going to happen until you have a president who has a similar view.”

The House is voting today on Rep. Black’s bill, which will defund Planned Parenthood for a year. House Majority Leader, Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has expressed his support.

She has not signed on to a letter pledging not to vote for any budget funding Planned Parenthood, and has not advocated for a shutdown. Black is a devoted pro-life Congresswoman however, and a member of the Pro-Life Caucus. And she has been dedicated to defunding Planned Parenthood.

Her call to McConnell, to “at least… fight the fight,” and send a message to America about dedication to the issue, is an honest and good effort.
