The Rev. Al Sharpton presided over a funeral on Wednesday’s “Politics Nation.” Unfortunately, it wasn’t to mourn the loss of MSNBC as a major network, but to offer condolences to the Republican Party’s talking points.
In the bizarre funeral segment, Sharpton appeared behind a podium and surrounded by flower arrangements to announce the death of the GOP’s Obamacare talking points. The MSNBC host launched into a eulogy about Republicans’ claims that 33 percent of Obamacare enrollees failed to pay their first month’s premiums.
“Dearly beloveds, we’re gathered here today to mourn a sad loss, the loss of another bogus GOP talking point on the Affordable Care Act,” Sharpton said. “…This great talking point joins so many others that have perished before our eyes,” Sharpton said.
The MSNBC host was referencing a report from the House Energy and Commerce Committee which found that only 66 percent of those enrolled in the Affordable Care Act had paid their premiums. The White House, however, refuted that figure and said between 80 and 90 percent had.
Executives from top insurance companies appeared before the Energy and Commerce Committee on Wednesday and told members at least 80 percent of enrollees paid for their plans.
“The not-paying-premiums talking point is survived by right-wing radio hosts, Fox News anchors and millions of uncles at conservative dinner tables from across the country,” Sharpton continued. “May it rest in peace because we got you.”
The MSNBC host also highlighted a host of other GOP talking points regarding the Affordable Care Act and threw around words like “job killer,” “death panels” and “death spiral,” which he said “turned to dust.”
The segment featured somber music and animated headstones highlighting the talking points.
