Stephen Colbert’s solution for the GOP on Obamacare: “April Fools!”

After Obamacare enrollment exceeded the necessary amount on Tuesday, comedian Stephen Colbert came up with a solution for how the Republicans can avoid looking bad: “April Fools!”

On Tuesday, the White House announced that more than 7 million people had signed up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act — 7 million being the number of enrollees required to make the system financially viable. And since the announcement came on April 1, Colbert saw the timing as a perfect out for members of the GOP who had insisted that there was no way the ACA would meet its enrollment goal.

“Folks, to win the midterms, this is going to require some straight talk,” the Colbert Report host said during his show on Tuesday night. “We conservatives must look the American people in the eye and say, ‘April Fools! Gotcha! Gotcha!'”

“Come on,” Colbert continued. “Obviously, fighting Obamacare was a four-year prank. I can’t believe you bought it. Why would we be the only Western industrialized nation without access to affordable health care?”

The comedian mocked Republicans for insisting time and again that the goal of 7 million enrollees would never be met. He added that no one could have predicted that young Americans would sign up at the last minute, since that’s never the way college students operate.
