Madonna puts words in Hillary Clinton’s mouth

Let this be a reminder to always fact check your Hillary Clinton quotes.

Since 2012, Internet users have been attributing a quote to Hillary Clinton that originally appeared in an article written about her — not by her.

According to Jezebel managing editor Erin Gloria Ryan, an excerpt from her May 2012 piece about Clinton and her makeup choices has wound up on memes and in posts to Pinterest, Instagram, and Tumblr as if it was spoken by Hillary.

The quote reads:

You may not agree with a woman, but to criticize her appearance — as opposed to her ideas or actions — isn’t doing anyone any favors, least of all you. Insulting a woman’s looks when they have nothing to do with the issue at hand implies a lack of comprehension on your part, an inability to engage in high-level thinking. You may think she’s ugly, but everyone else thinks you’re an idiot.

Until now, Ryan has shrugged off the misrepresentation of her quote as Hillary’s words by random people on the Internet. But then Madonna tweeted an image of the quote Sunday — attributed to “Hilary Clinton” — in recognition of International Women’s Day.

Oops. In response, Ryan penned an article Tuesday entitled, “Dear Madonna: I Am Not ‘Hilary Clinton,’ and Hillary Didn’t Write That,” in which she details the misquotation saga. She writes:

Maybe it’s because Madonna has built her entire career on passing off other people’s innovations as her own and making sure the original authors of things don’t get as much credit for their work as she does. Maybe it’s because Madonna’s social media campaign to promote her new album has been among one of the most irritating in modern internet history. I don’t have the platform to correct her myself and hope to be noticed, so, Madonna, consider this my correction: I am not ‘Hilary Clinton.’ And please stop using something I wrote to promote your goddamn album.

Ironically, Madonna herself fell victim to Internet theft just weeks ago, and now she’s the one stealing one person’s work and giving it to another.

Madonna has yet to address the issue on social media, but when she does, undoubtedly she’d hashtag it #rebelheart.
