Elon Musk, the billionaire founder of private space travel company SpaceX, is not looking forward to our robot overlords.
At the MIT AeroAstro Centennial Symposium, Musk told an audience member he thinks artificial intelligence is probably “our biggest existential threat.”
“With artificial intelligence we’re summoning the demon,” Musk warned. “You know those stories where there’s the guy with the pentagram, and the holy water, and he’s like — Yeah, he’s sure he can control the demon? Doesn’t work out.”
Musk proposed setting up “regulatory oversight” of artificial intelligence research at both the national and international level, “just to make sure that we don’t do something very foolish.”
Musk has a kindred spirit in Stephen Hawking, who is also concerned about robots.
