Parents can teach their children about Donald Trump through books, and now Netflix shows. The third season of All Hail King Julien, a spin-off of the Madagascar films, premiered on Friday, with an episode about Trump, The Huffington Post was also happy to report with “Netflix Kids Show Will Teach Children About Evils of Donald Trump.”
The Huffington Post spoke with Mitch Watson of the show, who explained the Trump wall connection. “The song ‘Don’t Touch Our Stuff’ is essentially about building a wall to keep other animals away because Julien and the lemurs feel they are taking away their jobs even though the lemurs don’t work, and taking their housing even through there are plenty of trees, and eating their food even though there is more than enough for everyone,” he said.
A clip provided to The Huffington Post includes the line from one lemur that “There’s only one way to do it. We have to build a wall,” as other lemurs cheer. While one lemur tries to tell King Julien to do something since “this has gotten out of hand,” Julien still goes ahead with the plan.
King Julien, a lemur, was not initially meant to be based off of Trump, but the show’s creators decided it was just too hard to pass up the opportunity. And Trump isn’t the only phenomenon they’ve satirized. “We specifically wanted stories that had some kind of social satire,” Watson said, who also explained that the show “attempts to satirize many aspects of American pop culture and politics.”
The Don’t Touch Our Stuff song may have come about as early as 2015 to deal with American deportation and isolationism, but the rise of Trump, whom a DreamWorks PR person refers to as “the certain presidential candidate that millennials love to hate,” has given the show something to lean on.
