Stephen Colbert undermines Obama’s broken promise on immigration reform

Comedian Stephen Colbert attempted to undermine the fact that President Obama broke his promise to use executive action on immigration by the end of the summer during Monday’s episode of “The Colbert Report.”

In the segment “Waiting Forever for Immigration Reform,” Colbert accused Obama of stealing the idea of doing nothing on immigration reform from House Republicans.

“I’m mad that Obama is delaying immigration reform because he stole that idea from the Republicans,” Colbert said. “They’ve had the idea of putting off doing something about immigration reform for over a decade.”

He then spent the rest of the segment focusing on Republicans and their inability to drum up support for comprehensive immigration reform instead of spotlighting the most recent development on the subject, namely President Obama’s broken promise.

“We can’t ever pass immigration reform; it would take it off the agenda,” detailed Colbert. “But, don’t lose hope, immigrants. Just because our leaders are telling you to wait until next year doesn’t mean it won’t happen. As long as you just wait until next year. Right, John Boehner from last week?”

Colbert pointed to Boehner’s statement from September 2, which said, “There’s a possibility that Congress could take this issue up next year.”

“Next year!” exclaimed Colbert. “That’s guaranteed. Next year, guaranteed that it’s a possibility. And, Boehner gets the immigrant experience because he remembers how many years it took Congress to welcome his people, the tangelo Americans.”

The end of the clip even features a special guest from the future who tells the comedian that immigration reform has still not been passed in the year 2372.

Individuals in favor of immigration reform — like journalist Jorge Ramos and National Immigration Law Center executive director Marielena Hincapié— have hit back at the president for not following through on his guarantee this summer.
