House GOP to Obama: take off “Superman cape” and put forth a budget

The House GOP has a message for President Obama: you’re no superhero, so take off the cape and start acting like an adult.

During a press conference on Tuesday morning, members of the House Republican Conference, the House GOP caucus, criticized the President for his inability to pass — or even propose — a balanced federal budget.

“We hope [the President] takes off his Superman cape and sends up a serious plan,” said Conference Vice Chairman Rep. Lynn Jenkins (R-Kan.).

Jenkins spoke about the need for an “adult” budget strategy. She was joined by Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), Conference Chairman Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.), Rep. Tom Price (R-Ga.) and Rep. Susan Brooks (R-Ind.), who also gave remarks.

Cantor spoke about the Require a PLAN Act, a bill introduced by Price that Cantor says tells the President to “please join us in doing your job.” In all seriousness, the legislation would require the White House to “either produce a balanced budget or provide a supplemental budget plan by April 1, 2013 that identifies in what fiscal year their plan would achieve balance,” according to Price’s website.

The President is legally required to submit a federal budget for the upcoming fiscal year on the first Monday of February, as mandated by the Budget and Accounting Act of 1921 and the Budget Act of 1974. This is the fourth year out of five that Obama has failed to do so.

In response to questions from the press, Boehner commended both Republicans and Democrats alike for working together to reform immigration, but criticized Democrats and President Obama for failing to do anything to stop the impending sequester.
