On Colbert: Bill Clinton clarifies Trump call rumors, explains Trump’s appeal

Former President Bill Clinton appeared on Late Night with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday was asked to explain three things: Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) rise in the Democratic primary, Donald Trump’s rise in the Republican field, and if he called Trump and asked him to run for president.

Clinton said that Sanders’ appeal is because a large percentage of the Democratic party feels that both the system is rigged against them, and that they should act more like Republicans and stop rewarding moderates.

He made no comment about his wife’s e-mail scandal or the fact that she’s seen in the polls as disingenuous and dishonest.

The former president was asked by Colbert about why Trump is doing so well in the polls.

“Because he’s a master brander and he’s the most interesting character out there,” Clinton said. “And because he says something that overrides the ideological differences.”

“Look at the first debate. A lot of those guys were competing for who could be the most politically correct on the answers,” he continued. “Trump says okay I’ve supported Democrats, I’ve supported Republicans, yes I use to be friends with Bill Clinton, who cares. I run things and I build things and you need someone like me to go in there and fix it.”

Trump’s attitude as someone who wanted to take over and build thing has a masculine appeal, Clinton insisted.

Colbert also asked the former president to discuss the rumor that he called Trump and asked him to run for president.

“No, no,” Clinton said smiling. “I get credit for doing a lot of things I didn’t do.”

Where does that sound familiar?

“His daughter told my daughter that he had tried to call me and I didn’t get the message,” Clinton explained. “So I simply called him back… and by the time I had gotten him back he had forgotten why he called me in the first place.”
