Bill Clinton can’t even defend the Clinton Foundation’s foreign donations to his allies.
The former president embarrassingly dodged questions about the charity’s suspect acceptance of foreign money during a conference meant to spotlight the Clinton Foundation’s charity work in Marrakech, Morocco, Wednesday.
Telecom entrepreneur and billionaire Mo Ibrahim, a clear ally and supporter of the Clinton Foundation, expressed his outrage at the American media’s scrutiny of the foundation in light of reports of foreign money flowing to the charity and presented Clinton with the perfect opportunity to defend the charitable work.
“I was in the U.S. 10 days ago,” Ibrahim recalled. “I opened the newspaper and I was shocked to see these attacks on the [Clinton Foundation]. And what amazed me is — I used to respect American media — and I was amazed because I started to watch the news — Fox and other guys — and none of those people asked a question [about] what this foundation is doing actually.”
“What it has done in agriculture, what it has done for education, what it has done in Haiti, what it has done — nobody is asking,” he continued. “What is wrong if Saudi Arabia gives money for a farm in Africa? What is the big deal? Is that not a good thing to do?”
The billionaire insisted that Clinton “should stand up and really take issue,” calling on the former president to do just that.
“What is this money for? What have you done with it?” he asked as Clinton bizarrely laughed. “What is the problem?”
“I just work there, I don’t know,” Clinton responded as Ibrahim looked on, clearly unsatisfied with the answer.
“Look, there’s one set of rules for politics in America and another set for real life and you just have to learn to deal with it,” Clinton stammered.
“This would not apply,” Ibrahim pressed. “These are respectable newspapers.”
Clinton then cut Ibrahim off, thanking him for standing up for the foundation before suddenly changing the topic of conversation.
Either Hillary Clinton, who is now officially running for president, either demanded Bill not publicly address the foreign donation scandal, or he truly doesn’t know what the foundation does with its money. Neither is less disturbing.
