On Tuesday night, Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., sipped a beer and ate her words.
The Missouri Democrat, back in 2006, said she wouldn’t want Bill Clinton anywhere near her daughter. “Here’s the deal–I’ve said a lot of things in the last 30 years that I’m not particularly proud of–I mean there’s been things I’ve said that I wish I could take back,” McCaskill said when prodded by John Stanton of Buzzfeed. “It was gratuitous and hurtful and I’ve apologized to both President Clinton and Hillary Clinton for saying it and we’ve kind of gotten over that.”
Stanton was hosting McCaskill at the latest Buzzfeed Brews, a just-about-monthly political Q&A that takes place at a District (open!) bar packed with Washington journalists. McCaskill chose a Missouri favorite–a Boulevard Wheat beer–to drink throughout the interview. (She was later gifted a large bottle from Boulevard’s brewers, to help her celebrate her 60th birthday on Wednesday.)
Stanton asked how McCaskill’s relationship has been with the Clintons since she made the comment, but also, after she endorsed President Obama’s run in 2008. “I think they understand…it wasn’t like I endorsed a ‘good ol’ boy’ against her,” McCaskill explained. “I mean, we had two historic candidates, they were both amazing.”
Last month, McCaskill signed on to the Ready for Hillary super PAC. Tuesday night, she reiterated her support. “I couldn’t be more enthusiastic for her to be president now and I can’t wait to work as hard or harder for Hillary Clinton, as I did for Barack Obama, and I think they understand that,” giving another nod to the Clintons.
