Bill Maher tears into ‘politically correct a–holes who want to turn this country into a place I don’t want to live in’

Liberal comedian Bill Maher is way off base on a lot of topics (ahem, defending the Hillary emails!), but there is one topic no one rants about better than Maher — the power and need for free speech and an anti-politically correct culture.

Maher tore into the “politically correct assholes” Friday night on his HBO show during a segment with actor Sean Penn. Penn had cracked a joke while presenting at the Oscars that didn’t sit very well with the PC Twitter mobs and Maher congratulated him on not backing down.

“I really want to relate this, what you were just saying, back to something that is very dear to my heart which is political correctness. Because you said at the Oscars, and I texted you I loved this, when you gave out the Best Director — what’s his name? Alejandro,” Maher said.

“Alejandro González Iñárritu,” Penn said, naming the Birdman director.

“And you said, ‘who gave this son of a bitch a green card?’ and of course you got worlds of shit. And I just feel like we’re living in this country now where no one can make a joke, no one can have any nuance to what they say. We are just constantly hounded by the politically correct assholes out there who want to turn this country into a place that I don’t want to live in,” Maher declared.

Penn said social media has made this kind of PC culture worse because people feel like they are joining a “gang” and gain a sense of belonging when they join the chorus against free speech.

Maher said that these are people who have “never done anything good in their life and they want to feel like they’re the good people” by silencing someone who says something provocative.
