Mother’s Day is right around the corner, but the most high-profile mother in the United States, Michelle Obama, shouldn’t expect any extra congratulations from many Americans.

On Monday, the official Twitter account run by the Democratic Party encouraged Americans to sign the First Lady’s Mother’s Day card.

“Make sure that signing the First Lady’s card is on your Mother’s Day to-do list,” the tweet, which includes a sappy photo of the Obamas, reads.

Monday’s tweet was just one of several in the same vein over recent days. This tactic has been used in the past — successfully — for things like birthdays and the Obamas’ anniversary. This was not like those times, however.

The Democratic Party probably didn’t anticipate the overwhelming response from Twitter users: No.

Many people tweeted back, expressing disbelief that they were expected to sign a card for someone who is not their mother. Some took jabs at the First Lady, but even the most respectful replies were still surprised at the request.

Better luck next time, Democrats.
