How much would it take for you to give up your Second Amendment rights? Democrats might be willing to pay you.
A group of House Democrats plans to re-introduce a bill next week that would offer tax breaks to those who handed over their “assault rifles” to a law enforcement officer. The bill—the “Support Assault Firearm Elimination and Education of our (SAFER) Streets Act”— would allow for up to $2,000 in tax credits, the Hill reports.
Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.), the bill’s sponsor, wrote in a statement, “Assault weapons are not about hunting, or even self-defense. There is no reason on Earth, other than to kill as many people as possible in as short a time as possible, that anyone needs a gun designed for a battlefield.”
DeLauro is selling her reintroduction of the bill as part of “National Public Health Week.” She also makes clear in her statement that she “supports a comprehensive ban on assault weapons as well as high capacity ammunition feeding devices.”
She claims that these “assault weapons” are “disproportionately used to kill law enforcement officers in the line of duty”—although she offers no supporting evidence, while the term “assault weapon” is essentially meaningless.
For the purpose of the bill, DeLauro offers various examples of what would qualify as an “assault weapon,” including AKs, AR–15s, or any “semiautomatic rifle that has an ability to accept a detachable magazine, and that has—(i) a folding or telescoping stock, (ii) a threaded barrel, (iii) a pistol grip, (iv) a forward grip, or (v) a barrel shroud.”
