During a committee hearing, Australian feminist Senator Katy Gallagher accused her conservative colleague of “mansplaining,” and he exposed her as a sexist.
“I’m love the mansplaining, I’m enjoying it,” Gallagher said to MP Mitch Fifield.
When Fifield asked what she meant by her comments, the feminist Senator said that it was the “patronizing and condescending way” the male MP was speaking to her.
“Well I would suggest Senator that if you’re putting the word ‘man’ in front of some description of what I’m doing, you’re doing that which I’m sure you’re very much against,” Fifield said. “Making a sexist implication about how I’m conducting my role.”
Gallagher tried to explain that she was the real victim for the way he was answering her questions but Fifield wouldn’t have it.
“Imagine Senator, imagine if I said you were ‘womansplaining’, imagine the reaction if I said you were ‘womansplaining,'” the MP said.
She insisted that it’s a regular term that’s used but couldn’t exactly say who used it.
“(It’s used) by rude Senators, by senators that are seeking to make gender an issue, stop being a hypocrite, and conduct yourself appropriately for this place,” Fifield said. “Hypocrisy, thy name is Labour, thy name is Senator Gallagher.”
