Democrats really jumped the gun on this one.
It seems that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee was in such a hurry to fundraise over their hatred for Republicans this weekend that they were willing to spread a little misinformation to do so.
The DCCC emailed supporters Saturday morning incorrectly saying that Republicans had allowed the Department of Homeland Security to shut down.
“Republicans forced a shutdown of Homeland Security. It started at MIDNIGHT last night,” the DCCC wrote. “Together, we can make the Republicans regret their destructive choice to shut down President Obama’s agenda. Don’t miss this chance!”
But in fact this was not true. The House averted a DHS shutdown late Friday after voting 357-60 on a one-week funding bill. The Senate passed the same seven-day measure in a voice vote and President Obama signed the bill just before midnight.
The group emailed supporters again around noon on Saturday, pointing out the mistake and semi-apologizing.
“We screwed up,” they wrote. But then they continued to blame Republicans.
The emails said that the “actual bad news” was that Congressional fighting over DHS funding wasn’t over.
Whoops.
