Political television shows largely snubbed at Emmys

Most of the 66th  annual Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday felt like a repeat of 2013’s awards show. “Modern Family,” “Breaking Bad” and “The Big Bang Theory’s” Jim Parsons all dominated the night, leaving most of the politically-themed and Washington D.C.-set shows out in the cold.

Though “House of Cards”, “Scandal”, “Homeland”, “The Good Wife”, “The Americans,” “The Newsroom”, and “Veep” all scored nominations in the major categories, only “Veep” and “The Good Wife” were able to take home the gold.

Both shows won the Outstanding Lead Actress category for comedy and drama respectively.

It was the third year that Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who plays the fictional vice president on the HBO’s “Veep,” has captured the Emmy in the category and the second win for “The Good Wife’s” Julianna Margulies. Margulies beat out Robin Wright on “House of Cards,” “Homeland’s” Claire Danes and “Scandal” star Kerry Washington.

“Veep” was passed over for Outstanding Comedy Series by “Modern Family,” which won for the fifth consecutive year.

“House of Cards” didn’t win any of the major categories, but they did score one of the best tweets and reactions of the night.
