Following fmr. Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum’s exit from the race for Republican nomination for president, the big question is: Are conservatives going to finally unite around fmr. Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney as the presumptive nominee?
Some may be doubtful that conservatives will come around, but recent Twitter activity confirms that are starting to do so: when the options are down to Barack Obama or Mitt Romney, conservatives realize the fundamental choice is between a free, democratic society based on conservative values and the big government, regulated, stagnant, socialist policies of our current administration.
While they’re at it tweeting, people are quick to defend the core values which make our country great.
On March 23, 2012, President Obama’s official Twitter account sent out a tweet commemorating the passage of Obamacare (President Obama’s landmark yet unpopular healthcare reform):
President Obama’s campaign was calling for people to spread their support of Obamacare through personal stories and by offering reasons to like Obamacare – without missing the opportunity to frame their Republican opponents as not credible, of course.
What happened instead? Conservatives hijacked the #ILikeObamacare hashtag and exposed the truth of the matter. Within moments of the tweet, the whole column of the hashtag was filled with ironic tweets letting President Obama (and everybody else) know why the majority of people do not support Obamacare, what freedoms it violates, and why The Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) is unconstitutional and unsustainable.
Similarly, several days later, President Obama’s campaign tweeted the following attack on Mitt Romney:
Once again, conservatives jumped to respond – this time, to Romney’s defense – and overran the #WhatsRomneyHiding hashtag, preventing President Obama from smearing the discussion, devolving from policy debate to personal attacks. (Conservatives on Twitter also managed to get quite a few jabs about Obama’s policies in there as well).
The example that takes the cake, however, is the ongoing defense of Mitt Romney’s wife, Ann Romney (and all stay at home moms), regarding the comments made by Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen on CNN. After Rosen made a remark about Ann Romney “never working a day in her life,” Twitter lit up, defending Ann Romney, stay-at-home moms everywhere, and ultimately, the choice of women to decide what’s best for themselves and their family. Twitter conservatives were quick to expose Democrats’ lack of respect for true women’s equality, based on the attacks Rosen made against Ann Romney, and within 24 hours, Rosen issued a lukewarm apology.
These examples demonstrates how conservatives – even those not thrilled with Mitt Romney’s as presumptive Republican nominee for president – will rally behind Romney and behind the common goal of defeating Barack Obama in the November election.
Given the choice between the current liberal administration and the fundamental conservative values on which our country was founded, conservatives have and will continue to throw their wholehearted support behind conservatism and behind Mitt Romney. Just follow some conservatives on Twitter and wait and see.
