Colbert to Kasich: “How is losing winning?”

Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) appeared on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert Thursday and discussed how he became a winner by losing in New Hampshire, the vacant Supreme Court seat, and that the debates were less than smart.

“What is it about this race, you know Rubio was crowing about being in third place in Iowa, you’re thrilled about being second place in New Hampshire,” Colbert said. “How is losing winning?”

Kasich said that his visibility increased significantly since he lost in the Granite State.

“Well remember the last time I was on, not a person had a clue who I was,” Kasich said.

“I knew,” Colbert replied. “They told me right before you walked on.”

“What happened is New Hampshire is place where you can get on a rocket ship and become known and it’s really happened,” the Ohio governor continued.

Colbert followed up by asking Kasich what he thought about the debates.

“People are getting tired of the negative,” Kasich said.

The comedian then screamed “shut up!” and when the audience applauded and laughed he said, “they’re not getting that tired of it.” Colbert wanted to know why the debates made America seem so much worse than it is.

“The debates are the dumbest things going,” Kasich replied. “Look it’s sort of like, explain you’re entire life story in 30 seconds.  I mean Harry Truman couldn’t get elected this way, the thing I love are the town halls.”

Kasich said that building bridges and bringing people together would be his largest priority. He alluded that had President Obama worked to build unity there would be less opposition to the idea of him nominating a replacement to Justice Scalia.
