[WATCH] Bill Maher: America needs to stop hanging on to the Second Amendment

Bill Maher has some interesting ideas for what should be America’s 2014 resolutions. But one of his requests sure isn’t going to sit well with the masses, as Maher called on the U.S. to stop hanging on to the Second Amendment.

Wrapping up his first episode of 2014, the “Real Time” host decided to close Friday’s show with his list of New Year’s resolutions for America — two weeks into the new year. Maher encouraged his fellow Americans to “stop hanging on to stupid stuff long after it’s relevant just because it’s tradition,” referencing “stuff” like the penny, the war on drugs and the Second Amendment.

“We’re not going to drop that bad habit without making another important resolution, which is to stop hanging on to stupid stuff long after it’s relevant just because it’s tradition,” Maher said. “We don’t need the electoral college or the drug war or the penny. Or farm subsidies or an amendment in the Constitution about how citizens need rifles in case they have to take over the government. Why do we still have these things?”

After taking an obvious jab at the Second Amendment, Maher continued on his laundry list of things America needs to abandon. He questioned why he was still getting the phone book, why there were still “two Dakotas” and why America still has Daylight Savings Time.

Maher’s last request for America was to “be more cynical” and “less easily fooled.” His example: the wildly popular A&E show “Duck Dynasty.”

“Heroes to all the rural heartland, traditional values, gun nuts out there,” the “Real Time” host said, referencing the show and showing a photo of the Robertson brothers in their earlier years. “…That’s right, it’s all an act. Fat cats pretending to be just folks. And you fell for it. Take a hint, tea partiers. This is what the Republican Party is always doing to you.”

Maher has been a long-time opponent of the right to bear arms, calling the Second Amendment “bulls**t” last year. However, the outspoken liberal revealed he actually owns several firearms himself.
