GOP candidate Jeb Bush promotes his record on guns and crime

Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush campaigned in Henderson, Nevada, on Saturday where he spent his time touting his pro-gun record as governor of Florida.

During his tenure, Bush signed six major pieces of pro-gun ownership reform, including the controversial “stand your ground” law, and received an A+ rating from the NRA.

“Florida is a pro-gun state. Gun violence has dropped. There’s a reason for it,” Bush said Saturday after speaking at a town hall event, according to CNN. “We created a balance that’s focused on lowering gun violence but protecting the Second Amendment, and it’s a model for many other countries and many other states because of that.”

Bush also emphasized to reporters that he signed law-and-order bills to combat gun crime.

A notable piece of legislation was his “10-20-Life” law that issues a minimum 10-year sentence for any individual who pulls a gun when committing a crime, a 20-year sentence for pulling the trigger of a gun during a crime, and a 25-year sentence to life in prison for harming or killing someone else by pulling the trigger.

On the issue of the recent mass shootings, Bush criticized President Obama for politicizing the issue and said we need to focus more on mental health issues as a way to solve the problem.

“I’d also say going forward that these cases — that the race system in Charleston or these cases of people who are just mentally deranged — we as a society better figure out how we identify these folks long before they feel compelled to take up a gun and kill innocent people,” Bush said.
