Back to the Future Day should not be about Donald Trump

For the fans of the Back to the Future series, Oct. 21, 2015 is a very memorable day. In Back to the Future Part II, Marty McFly and Doc travel to the future, where it’s, you guessed it, Oct. 21, 2015. When Marty tries to return to the present though, things are all messed up with movie villain Biff Tannen in charge of things.

Facebook and Twitter have #BacktotheFuture as top trends, and there’s also a Facebook group about today. NBCNews has “10 Ways to Celebrate ‘Back to the Future’ Day.” CNN’s headline reads “Welcome, ‘Back to the Future’ Day.” BuzzFeed has a whole slew of recent posts. The Guardian is doing a live Back to the Future Day in two parts. And even the White House has a post up about today.

According to the movie’s trivia page, Biff Tannen was “loosely inspired” by Donald Trump. And what do you know, some have been running wild with that connection.

Back in July, many sites discussed the similarities and shared a “Trump to the Future” mashup video.

As for today, the Telegraph addresses the connection, but it’s mostly by compiling Tweets others posted about the similarities between Biff Tannen and Donald Trump.

For their coverage on Back to the Future, the Daily Beast devotes an entire piece about the connections between Biff Tannen and Trump. An earlier Tweet with a different image read “How Back to the Future Predicted Trump.” The article link now leads to “‘Back to the Future’ Writer: Biff Tannen Is Based On Donald Trump.”

The Hill today also thought it noteworthy to address the connection.

The Daily Beast had just days prior evoked Trump with the racist boycott of Star Wars VII as well.

There are many reasons to celebrate Back to the Future day, with many topics to discuss and speculate on. Even if the film’s writer does confirm the connection, it’s a worthy reminder that not everything has to be about Donald Trump.
